It's time to begin your safari. Welcome to Tanzania! After we greet you and provide you with the trip briefing, we'll take you out to help you discover why so many people think Tanzania is the best place in Africa to go on safari.

Spend some time in Arusha, both the gateway city for most safaris in northern Tanzania and a fascinating place to explore. Enjoy good restaurants, streets filled with energy and so many snapshots of vibrant Tanzanian city life. It’s everything you look for in an urban pit stop.

Day 2

Lake Manyara National Park

Strung out in the shadow of the Rift Valley escarpment, that great fracture in the earth’s surface that divides Africa in two, Lake Manyara is one of Tanzania’s more unusual parks. Here you’ll certainly see the elephants for which the park is famous, and, if you’re really lucky, one of the park’s equally well-known tree-climbing lions. There’s also a lake filled with wading birds, plenty of olive baboons, and dense forests that make you feel that exciting animals could emerge from the trees at any moment. It’s a wonderful chance to mark the transition between the lower plains and the Crater Highlands (with Ngorongoro Crater) away to the west.

Day 3

Lake Eyasi

You'll start your day with the dawn, as you'll be joining the Hadzabe Bushmen on their dawn hunt. The Hadzabe live today much as they have for centuries, with their hunter-gatherer lifestyle a reflection of how we all once lived.

You'll join the hunters for a hunting demonstration as they employ tactics such as mimicking animal cries and movements to lure in their prey before taking it down with homemade poisons. You'lll also see how the women of the tribe gather fruits, vegetables, and herbs for breakfast in what is a once in a lifetime cutural experience.

After breakfast, you'll have the day to explore the Lake Eyasi region. You can enjoy a drive around the lake or even get out stretching your legs with a nature walk. While Lake Eyasi does not boast the more dangerous big game, it does offer you the chance to see a number of herbivores and a stunning array of birdlife in a beautiful environment.

Around halfway between Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro, close to the busy town of Karatu but down a quiet side street, Marera Valley Lodge is an excellent place to stay. It has its own expansive grounds with big views out over the surrounding greenery. The handsome main building shelters a bar, restaurant and lounge, there's a swimming pool, and the spacious rooms are immaculate refuges you'll be happy to retreat to at the end of a long day.

Day 4

Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro is a special place and the first time that you descend onto the crater floor is like no other safari experience in Africa. This is a world unto itself, one where you’ll encounter the crater’s 600-strong population of hyenas, as well as critically endangered black rhinos. You’ll also find elephants with larger-than-average tusks, and more than 50 lions living in the crater. But it’s the sheer beauty of Ngorongoro that will most likely live longest in your memory. From early morning, mist rises from the crater, revealing steep, forested walls, secret waterways where hippos wallow, and a world of abundant wildlife hidden away from the rest of the world.

Your guided game drive down into and around Ngorongoro Crater, is one of the best safari experiences you can have in East Africa. Watch for lions, hyenas, black rhinos and more as you spend most of the day exploring the crater floor.

Lodge

Staying at Rhino Lodge is one of the pleasures of visiting Ngorongoro. Dense forest surrounds the property, and it's not unusual for guests to be enjoying a drink or a meal on the terrace while an elephant, buffalo or bushbuck passes by right in front of them. The lodge has good rooms, a well-regarded restaurant, and the warm personal service from the Italian and Maasai staff is a real highlight. Rhino Lodge is also really quiet, but conveniently close to the crater rim.

Day 5

Serengeti National Park

Welcome to the Unesco World Heritage–listed Serengeti, one of Africa’s top safari destinations. While you’re here, there’s an excellent chance that you’ll see leopards along the dry riverbanks, cheetahs out on the grasslands, and elephants, giraffes and all kinds of antelopes everywhere across the park. Watch also for the Serengeti’s famous lion prides. And that’s just the start. Some of the largest and most diverse wildlife populations on the planet roam the Serengeti, not to mention millions of wildebeest and zebras who migrate across the plains every year.

Shifting Sand

Within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area lies a mesmerizing phenomenon known as the Shifting Sands. This vast plain of fine, volcanic ash isn't anchored by vegetation, making it susceptible to the whims of the wind. As breezes dance across the crater floor, they sculpt the ash into mesmerizing ripples and waves, resembling a miniature desert unfolding before your eyes. The ever-changing patterns create a dynamic landscape, with dunes shifting and reforming in a silent but captivating display. Observing this natural artistry adds another layer of intrigue to your Ngorongoro experience, showcasing the raw power and playful nature of wind on this unique volcanic landscape.

Visit Olduvai Gorge & Museum, Olduvai Gorge

You're going to visit Olduvai Gorge, where archaeologists in the 1950s and 1960s discovered fossils that forever changed our knowledge of human origins. You'll also visit the fine museum, which overlooks the gorge and which is a journey of discovery through the human story, beginning at the earliest days of humankind. The museum also has other finds from around the country.
